Galway Kinnell (2005)

Galway Kinnell

In the 2003 National Book Award judges' citation for his A New Selected Poems, Galway Kinnell was called, "America's preeminent visionary," with work in 12 collections that, "greets each new age with rapture and abundance ... [and] sets him at the table with his mentors: Rilke, Whitman and Frost." He says he realized the music in language early on through listening to the rhythm of his mother's Irish accent. His books, which span five decades, also include The Book Of Nightmares and Body Rags. He is also the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
